a wallpaper edition and vinyl record album project

The Maelström is a new limited art edition by Santiago Sierra that expands on his 2023 video work filmed in The Gambia. The edition pairs a vinyl record and three print formats: a centre-folded fine art print on rag paper, individual prints of the repeat patterns for seven different wallpaper designs, and a full wallpaper for an entire wall installation. By separating and reuniting image and sound, the edition exposes the aesthetics of power, the violence of representation, and the mechanisms of postcolonial control – continuing Sierra’s incisive critique of inequality and institutional structures within contemporary art.
